Mridul Phukan (with bald head), the prime accused in the murder of eminent journalist Parag Das acquitted by a District session court as CBI enquiry failed to submit proper evidence of his involvement in the murder in Guwahati on Tuesday, 28 July 2009. Veteran journalist Parag Das was shot dead in city’s Rajgarh Road near Chandmari in broad daylight on May 17, 1996. The CBI, entrusted with the probe into the case, later filed the chargesheet in this connection in November 24, 2000, where it named four surrendered cadres of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) as the prime accused. The names include Mridul Phukan, Nayan Das, Diganta Baruah and Tapan Dutta while accept Mridul Phukan the other three accused were died under different circumstances during the course of the investigation.
